The Yucatan Peninsula and diving in Playa del Carmen
On the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula is the Mexican Caribbean, also better known as the Riviera Maya.
The area offers the rich culture of the Maya from archeological ruins to cuisine and, of course, diving in Playa del Carmen.
Diving in Playa del Carmen is for everyone!
Diving in Playa del Carmen is suitable for everyone all year round due to our warm water temperatures and constant good visibility. Beginners to experienced sport divers all will get their money's worth here.
The coast off Playa del Carmen offers us a wide variety of fringing reefs. An elongated hem reef at a depth of 10-12 meters houses a huge variety of Caribbean marine life. Large schools of yellow-striped grunts, many pufferfish, Caribbean lobsters, large stingrays, lots of Turtles and much more can be found.
If you have a good eye, you can even spot a seahorse or two in the mild current.
During the winter months (November to February) in Playa del Carmen, there is also the chance for our divers who are already AOWD certified to see bullsharks
The underwater topography extends from the shallow reefs to a wide sandy area and then we encounter the next, deeper reefs at a depth of 20-23 meters.
In this part of the underwater landscape. we glide along sections of the barrier reef, some of which are up to 10 meters high.
With a mostly moderate current and a maximum diving depth of 30 meters, these dives are more suitable for more experienced divers or for those who want to have their first experience in deep and drift diving.
On our deep dives we typically see giant moray eels, crabs, and majestic spotted eagle rays. In the winter months, there is often the opportunity to encounter sailfish or even dolphins in the deeper waters. Keep an eye out as we may also see our winter visitors, the bull sharks.
As a German dive center here in Playa del Carmen, it is extremely important to us to organize the day according to your wishes. We guarantee you will never dive in a group with more than 4 divers + guide for your safety and enjoyment.

Cenote diving without special training
Of course, you also can dive deep into the caves in Mexico's cenotes, but for these demanding dives you need special „Full-Cave“ diver training.
As a small German dive center, DeepDiveMexico offers you the unique opportunity to explore the most beautiful parts of the cenotes without special training. All you need is a basic dive certification such as the OWD or CMAS * and good buoyancy.
For our less experienced divers, we offer the Peak Performance Buoyancy course for free. You only pay for the certification costs of the respective diving organization.
When cavern diving in and around Playa del Carmen, we mainly explore the spectacular entrance areas of the cenotes. The rule of thumb here is that you must never be further than 60 meters from the nearest exit and that daylight must always remain visible.
Our cenote guides are all specially trained cave divers with thousands of dives. In addition to a very detailed briefing, we give you the history of how the cenotes came to be.
In Mexico we have the 3 longest flooded cave systems in the world. Come explore this stunning overhead environment and dive the caverns - the cenotes are waiting for you.

Cozumel, the pearl of the Caribbean
Cozumel is Mexico's third largest island and scuba diving on Cozumel is considered one of the best spots for diving in the Mexican Caribbean, perhaps the world.
Cozumel is located directly across from the Yucatan Peninsula and can be reached by ferry or directly from Playa del Carmen by speedboat.
2 different companies provide ferry services and they alternate every 30 minutes.
With a dive-friendly climate all year round, Cozumel is one of the most beautiful and, at the same time, most hidden diving wonders in the world.
The entire northwest coast is a marine national park and is part of the second largest barrier reef in the world. As a protected area, certain activities, such as fishing, are not permitted.
The world-famous reefs Colombia and Palancar form a ring around the southern tip of Cozumel. These and other reefs feature steep walls and drift dives for which Cozumel is well known.
Diving at Cozumel
What is the procedure?
We start in the morning at 8 a.m. with pick-up in Playa del Carmen. After a 10-minute drive to a small harbor in Playa, we board the speed boat that takes us directly to Cozumel.
The travel time to the reefs of the island is only about 35-45 minutes, which is much faster and more comfortable than arriving by ferry.
We'll do the first dive with you on one of the phenomenal drop offs for which Cozumel is famous.
After the first dive, there are light snacks on the boat. Typically, there are sandwiches to make yourself as well as fruit and muffins.
The second dive takes place on one of the inner reefs. Usually a moderate current allows us to see large schools of jacks or sometimes eagle rays or nurse sharks.
Since Cozumel is a national park, the nature here is untouched by fishing and this easily can be seen by the size of the marine life.

Diving courses in Playa del Carmen
The most popular courses at our dive center are Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver.
With PADI as well as with SDI/TDI, you can start your theoretical training immediately. The course material is available from both agencies either as a book or as an online version and must be completed before the practical part of the course begins.
The Open Water Diver certification is the basic diving license - the introduction to diving.
The OWD course includes both theoretical and practical training sessions.
At the end there is a written exam.
We recommend three days to complete the OWD course. In addition to theory, training in the swimming pool and a total of four open water dives must be completed for certification.
The advanced diving license is the Advanced Open Water Diver (AOWD) certification. Here the focus is on gaining practical experience and knowledge by making 5 specialty dives. These can include deep diving, wreck diving, drift diving, night diving, navigation, buoyancy, etc.
But maybe there´s also a need for more equipment and technology. With our technical diving courses from PADI and TDI, we offer dive education on a world-class level.
Courses that we personally think make sense:
AOWD or Advanced Scuba Diver certification with PADI or SDI
A must after the Open Water Diver course as with advanced certification you can dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters.
Enriched Air Diver or Nitrox Diver certification with PADI or TDI
This course will enable you to use breathing gases that contain up to 40% oxygen.
Deep Diver certification with PADI or SDI
This certification allows you to dive to a depth of 40m.
Rescue Diver or Stress & Rescue certification with PADI or SDI
A diving course with a high fun factor that also teaches all the important elements of avoiding stress while diving. To start the course, you need to have First Aid & CPR certification which should not be older than two years. This, of course, can also be done with us.
To avoid harm to the sensitive underwater world, you should be able to do one thing above all: have perfect buoyancy control. Not only does having good buoyancy improve your air consumption, but you’ll also be able to move effortlessly through the water like a pro!
Snorkeling with whale sharks
Season from June to September!
The whale shark is the largest fish in the world and is guaranteed to be seen in very few places on our planet. Whale sharks annually gather off the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula to feed on plankton blooms. This is exactly why we’re in the best place in the world to snorkel with these gentle and gigantic fish.
The best time of year to see them is from the beginning of June to the end of September. This is when the water in the Caribbean is warmest and we can see what is probably the largest gathering of whale sharks in the world.
Whale sharks are mysterious and usually solitary animals that follow plankton as it moves with the currents of the ocean. Here huge gatherings of up to 300 animals are possible.
The whale shark excursion is suitable for the whole family.

Diving with bull sharks in Mexico
Season from November to mid-March!
The habitat of bull sharks is getting smaller and smaller here in Mexico as well as in the rest of the world due to the steadily growing human population.
Therefore, we want to make the encounter with the animals as natural as possible.
We meet either at 7:45 or at 11:30 in the morning and after a really extensive briefing on how to behave with the animals, we go on the boat.
After a short ride, we arrive at the aptly named "Bull Shark Point", a large sandy area with a gently sloping depth from 14-45 meters.
The perfect diving depth is 22-25 meters because this is where the pregnant female bull sharks feel most comfortable. In order to protect the animals and to maintain their natural behavior, we do not feed them.
Due to the given water depth, the AOWD certification is required to take part in the dive with the bull sharks.
Also, in order to enjoy the dive as long as possible, we recommend the use of Nitrox .
By the way, nitrox is free!
So? Don't miss out on this thrilling adventure.
