Cenote Calavera :
Level: Beginner to Advanced
Depth: max 17 meters
Temperature: constantly 26°C
Heading from Tulum in the direction of Coba on Highway 109, it’s just 2 kilometers to Cenote Calavera. Calavera means “skull” and the name is due to the 3 openings in the ceiling that look kind of like a skull if you look at them from below.
Cenote Calavera forms a part, just like Gran Cenote, of the longest flooded cave system in the world, Sac Actun. Our dive in Calavera starts already with a special adventure because the best way to enter the water is with a jump from a roughly 3-meter-high platform.
Our dive leads us in a big circle all around the open water area of the cenote. The maximum depth is 17 meters and at a depth of around 13 meters lies the halocline. What makes this cenote special are the formations we can find here.
The formations at the wall remind us of sculptures just like in a modern art museum. Good buoyancy is required because the sediment on the floor is very fine and, therefore, easily stirred up. During summertime, there is algae growing on the surface and it gives the daylight area a light green color.
