Cenote El Pit :
Level: Advanced
Depth: between 30 to 40 meters
Temperature: constantly 26°C
Cenote El Pit is a unique dive site that you won’t find anywhere else. The stairs going down into the cenote are steep, but there is a pulley system to lower or raise heavy equipment. At the site there are toilets, showers and nice tables to prepare equipment. It is best to arrive in the morning so we can take advantage of the light beams entering this deep sinkhole.
Our descent takes place along one of the walls so that we always have a reference while going down. At a depth of about 13 to 15 meters, there is a halocline – a layer where fresh and salt water are separated. At a moderate depth of 30 meters is a hydrogen sulfide layer with trees coming out of the ‘cloud’, just like in Cenote Angelita. This layer is made by bacterias that dissolve organic material that’s fallen down into the cenote. For humans, the cloud is absolutely harmless and we can dive through it without having any concerns.
Because of its great depth, we only recommend this cenote to our advanced divers.
