The Cenote Kin Ha :
Level: Advanced
Depth: between 30-40 meters
Temperature: constantly 26°C
Cenote Kin Ha is one of the typical sinkholes which can be found along the ‘Ruta de los Cenotes’, west of Puerto Morelos. The entrance from the highway is just about 100 meters next to Cenote Zapote. From Playa del Carmen, it’s a car ride of less than an hour and the rebuilt highway makes it much more comfortable now to get to the cenote.
Through an inconspicuous hole in the ground, which always reminds us of the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland, a ladder leads to a platform above the water.
When entering the cavern area, we quickly realize that there must be something wonderful waiting for us down there. Cenote Kin Ha has a diameter of about 50 meters and a depth of about 60 meters. The dive starts from the platform which is right in the middle of the cenote and from there we follow the wall down to a moderate depth of 30 meters. The cenote offers bell-shaped formations which are typical for this area and they can be found all around the walls of the cenote. During summer, the sun is shining almost straight into the cenote and gives us an astonishing view with the light effects.
At all times during the dive, we stay close to the wall so we have a visual reference. As soon we reach either our limit of no-decompression time or air supply, we start the ascent which is done in a form like a spiral.
This dive is an unforgettable experience not only for its unique formations, which are found only in a few cenotes, but also for its spectacular light effects.
