Diving in Playa del Carmen at our reef Tortugas
Tortugas Reef owes its name mostly to the countless turtles that can be spotted here. The reef is a flat coral garden covered with large brown barrel sponges that covers approximately 1 square kilometer and lies diagonally to the shore.
You can make a free descent as Tortugas Reef usually has a moderate current that is similar to Sabalos, for example.
Here you can dive from south to north starting from the shallower area (10-12 meters) to our maximum diving depth of 45 meters.
The range between 14-16 meters is perfect since we see a wide variety of marine life and have longer bottom time at this depth.
Hawksbill turtles, barracudas, eagle rays, parrotfish and a relatively large number of lionfish often can be seen here between 16 and 17 meters.
With a little luck, we see nurse sharks in the summer months and bull sharks in the winter months.
