You’ll learn how to handle additional equipment like stage tanks, plan and execute initial decompression dives, and prepare for more challenging depths and dive profiles. Safety, precise planning, and controlled diving are always paramount.

What is the Padi Tec 40?

The PADI Tec 40 course is the perfect course for all experienced divers among us who want to learn advanced diving techniques.

In other words: It’s the first step into the exciting world of technical diving!

Its most important components include dives with additional equipment such as a twinset and a stage tank,
planning and executing safe decompression dives up to a depth of 40 meters, and working with decompression software and gas management methods.

Furthermore, it’s the perfect training for advanced Tec courses like Tec 45 and Tec 50!

Course Outline

Day 1 – Theory & Equipment Workshop

  • Welcome and Course Overview

  • Introduction to Tec Equipment
    (Twinset, Stage, Long Hose, etc.)

  • Dive Physics and Physiology in Technical Diving

  • Introduction to Decompression Planning and Software (e.g., MultiDeco, Subsurface)

  • Setting up your Tec Equipment

  • Dry Training with Valve Drills and Gas Switching

  • Homework: Creating a Dive Plan for the Next Day


Day 2 – Dives 1 & 2

  • Dive 1 (max. 27 m):

    • In-Water Equipment Check & Valve Drills

    • Trim, Buoyancy, and Team Communication

    • Gas Switching Exercises

  • Dive 2 (max. 30 m):

    • Skills Review

    • Simulation of Short Decompression Stops

    • Underwater Navigation

    • Debriefing

Day 3 – Dives 3 & 4 (Required Dives)

  • Dive 3 + 4 (max. 40m, with deco)

    • Application of Full Decompression Planning

    • Gas Management and Gas Switching with Stage Tank

    • Stress Management and Problem Solving

Prerequisites for the Padi Tec 40 Course:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Certification for Diving with Twinset or Sidemount Equipment
  • Advanced Open Water Diver
  • Enriched Air Diver (Nitrox)
  • Deep Diver or demonstrably at least 10 dives deeper than 30 meters
  • At least 30 logged dives, of which at least 10 with Nitrox
  • Dive Medical, not older than 6 months

Standard Equipment for the PADI Tec 40 Course

  • Twinset with manifold or Sidemount

  • Stage tank with regulator

  • Two separate regulators, one with a long hose (approx. 2m)

  • Backup Mask

  • Primary Light
  • 2 Backup Lights
  • 2 Computers or Bottom Timers + Compass

  • Decompression Software or Planning Apps

  • Spool with buoy (DSMB)

  • Wetnotes or Slate

  • Suit adapted to the dive environment

  • Standard Diving Equipment
