General Information About the Rescue Diver Course

The Rescue Diver course is where diving stops being just about you and starts being about the whole group. Building on your Advanced Open Water Diver skills, you learn how to prevent, recognize, and respond to dive emergencies, so you become the calm, capable buddy every dive team needs. At DeepDiveMexico in Playa del Carmen, we teach the Rescue Diver Course through both SDI and PADI, so you can choose the system that fits your existing certifications and future plans. Official details on each certification system are available directly from PADI and SDI.

Many divers describe the Rescue Diver Course as the most rewarding certification they earn, because it changes the way you dive from that point on. You practice realistic rescue scenarios in the pool and in open water, working through panicked-diver responses, missing-diver searches, and in-water first aid, until they become second nature. It is also the mandatory stepping stone toward the professional-level Divemaster certification.

Requirements for the Rescue Diver Course

The exact prerequisites depend on which training organization you choose:

  • PADI: You need the Advanced Open Water Diver certification (see our Advanced Open Water Diver page for cost and depth details) plus a current Emergency First Response (EFR) or equivalent CPR/First Aid certification, which we can also complete with you beforehand.
  • SDI: You only need the Open Water Diver certification, making the SDI Rescue Diver course accessible a step earlier. If you are unsure which system fits you better, our PADI or SDI comparison breaks down the differences.

You should also be comfortable in the water, have logged a reasonable number of dives, and be at least 15 years old for the adult certification (12 for the Junior Rescue Diver, see below).

How Your Rescue Diver Course Works in Playa del Carmen

The Rescue Diver Course is typically split across three days, combining classroom learning, pool practice, and open-water scenarios:

Rescue Diver Course PADI or SDI training session with DeepDiveMexico

Day 1 – Theory and confined water: We start with the knowledge development sections covering self-rescue, stress recognition, and emergency management, followed by pool sessions where you practice tired-diver tows, panicked-diver holds, and out-of-air responses in a controlled environment.

Rescue Diver Course PADI or SDI: rescue exercise in Playa del Carmen

Days 2 and 3 – Open water scenarios: On our dive sites and reefs off Playa del Carmen, you work through a series of realistic rescue exercises: responding to a missing diver, managing a panicked diver at the surface, towing a non-breathing diver, and coordinating an emergency exit. These scenarios build directly on the skills you practiced in the pool, but now under real conditions.

Junior Rescue Diver (ages 10–14)

Younger divers aged 10 to 14 can complete the Junior Rescue Diver course with adapted skills and closer supervision, giving them a strong foundation in dive safety that carries over once they are old enough for the full certification.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Rescue Diver Course

What’s the difference between the PADI and SDI Rescue Diver course?

How long does the Rescue Diver Course take?

Most divers complete the course in three days, combining theory, pool practice, and open-water scenarios. We can adjust the schedule slightly depending on your prior experience and availability.

What certification do I need before starting?

For PADI, you need Advanced Open Water Diver plus a current EFR or CPR/First Aid certification. For SDI, Open Water Diver is sufficient. If you’re not sure which certification you currently hold qualifies, just send us a copy and we’ll confirm.

How much does the Rescue Diver Course cost?

The course costs 400 Euro, including instruction, materials, and certification. Equipment rental is available for an additional 20 Euros per day if needed.

Can kids do the Rescue Diver Course?

Yes. Divers aged 10 to 14 can take the Junior Rescue Diver course, which covers the same skills with age-appropriate adaptations and closer instructor supervision.

I’m already certified with a different agency. Can I switch to PADI or SDI?

Yes, crossovers are common. Bring your existing certification card and logbook, and we’ll credit your prior training where applicable so you don’t have to repeat material you’ve already mastered.
