Chunzumbul Reef
Chunzumbul is the longest and also one of the shallowest reefs in Playa del Carmen. As with almost all reefs, diving here is done from south to north. The majority of the reef is covered with large purple gorgonians as far as the eye can see, and along the reef edge, you can find entire sections with hard corals and larger brain corals. These provide shelter for creatures such as crabs, lobsters, and moray eels.
The highlights of this reef are two large overhangs, located approximately in the middle and at the end of the reef. Beneath them, you can find schools of yellowstripe grunts, red lionfish, and often large pufferfish. With a maximum depth of 10.5 meters and an average depth of 7 to 9 meters, you can make full use of your tank here and undertake extended dives, often lasting an hour.
