Dive Site: Tortugas
Level: Advanced
Depth: ideal at 16 meters
The Tortugas Reef is named after the countless turtles that can usually be spotted there. A flat platform, completely covered with large brown barrel sponges, lies diagonally in the water, approximately 1×1 kilometers in size.
Divers descend freely here, as this reef usually has a moderate current.
Diving here is from south to north and from the shallower area (10-12 meters) down to our maximum diving depth of 18 meters.
In the 16-17 meter range, you can often spot Hawksbill turtles, barracudas, eagle rays, parrotfish, and relatively many lionfish.
If you’re lucky, you can see nurse sharks in the summer months and bull sharks in the winter months.
