Sabalos Reef in Playa Del Carmen

Dive Site: Sabalos

Level: Beginner to Advanced
Depth: 12.5 meters maximum

The Sabalos Reef

Sabalos Reef is approximately 15-20 minutes by boat from the port in Playa del Carmen. Sabalos translates to “Tarpon” and in the late summer months, large schools of these beautiful creatures can be spotted here.

The reef itself is a typical fringing reef with a small wall that is consistently on your left shoulder. The maximum diving depth here is approximately 12.5 meters.

Due to the usually somewhat stronger current, we often spot turtles, barracudas, or even eagle rays here. In the current-protected areas of the reef, you’ll often find schools of yellowstripe grunts or snappers.
