Diving in Playa del Carmen at Barracuda Reef
To the south, in the direction of Punta Venado we find more reefs. One of them is Barracuda.
From the harbor in Playa del Carmen the reef is reached in about 15-20 minutes. With a depth of 12.5 meters and its proximity to Tortugas Reef, Barracuda is a great second dive after a deep dive at Tortugas or the wreck, “Mama Viña“.
The shape of the reef is like a hand and you dive from bay to bay around the respective ‘fingers’. However, the current can play a decisive role in how you dive the reef. If the current is too strong to dive around the ‘fingers’, you can simply drift over the corals until you arrive at the next bay
The bays are protected from the current so we can take our time taking a look at the reef’s caves. We usually see giant morays as well as lobsters and large crabs along the walls and roofs. As the reef´s name suggests, we often encounter larger barracudas here as they prey on the many smaller fish that make Barracuda Reef their home.
