The Cenote 7 Bocas :
Level: Advanced
Depth: between 30 to 40 meters
Temperature: constantly 26°C
Cenote Siete Bocas is reached by taking the highway which connects Puerto Morelos and Valladolid. This road is called ‘Ruta de los Cenotes’. The huge signs showing the entrance to the cenote make it almost impossible to not find the park. Unfortunately, the owners of the property have decided to focus more on snorkel trips than on diving, so there are no tables available to assemble our equipment. But on the other side, there are many palapas which create a nice atmosphere to relax.
Siete Bocas in Spanish means “seven mouths” and it is one of the many sinkholes in this region with a depth of more or less 70 meters. The cenote is named for the seven openings which are all connected by the cavern area underneath the roof. In each of the openings, there are stairs to enter and exit the cavern area.
We use one of the walls as a reference for our descent down to a depth of roughly 30 meters. A gigantic hydrogen sulfide cloud is the reason why some people also call the cenote ‘Milky Way’. Seven light beams enter through the roof and on a sunny day we can expect one amazing light show during our dive.
At a depth of 15 to 20 meters, we can find many fossils of shells or corals.
As the cavern probably had been dry for a very long time, the whole roof is covered with stalactites that grew to 5 meters long. So, for sure during the safety stop, we won’t get bored.
