Dive Site: Cenote 7 Bocas
Level: Advanced
Depth: 30 meters max.
Cenote 7 Bocas
Cenote 7 Bocas is located 20 km west of Puerto Morelos on the ‘Ruta de los Cenotes‘. This old road connects Puerto Morelos with Valladolid. The entrance is well-signposted, so you probably can’t miss it. The owners of this cenote have focused their tourism more on snorkelers, so unfortunately, no gear-up tables are available, but there are several small straw huts that offer a nice atmosphere.
Cavern Dive
Siete Bocas is Spanish for ‘7 Mouths’. Here you can find a karst terrain with 7 round sinkholes, each offering stairs down to the water. A huge sinkhole with a diameter of approx. 70m connects the 7 mouths. The water level here does not reach the cave ceiling, so we can confidently call this a cavern dive.
Milky Way
The descent follows one of the walls down to about 30m. A gigantic sulfur layer, formed by organic material in the cenote, one day led us to nickname the cenote ‘Milky Way’. Seven truly strong light beams stream through the openings and create an unforgettable play of light on sunny days.
Dive Area
In the 15-20 meter section of the dive, you can examine many fossils, such as shells or coral imprints. You definitely won’t get bored during the safety stop.
Since Cenote 7 Bocas was likely dry for a very long time, the entire cave ceiling is covered with gigantic stalactites, some reaching up to 5 meters in size.
