Cenote Angelita Diving

Cenote Angelita diving with DeepDiveMexico: guided from Playa del Carmen, max. 4 guests per guide.

Level: Advanced
Depth: 30 meters (98 ft) max.

The Cenote Angelita

The name Cenote Angelita is fitting: in Spanish, it means “little angel“. This dive is a unique and rather unusual cenote experience in many ways.

17km south of Tulum, this is the furthest from Playa del Carmen. This picturesque circular cenote is approx. 60m (197 ft) deep.

Murky Water Layer

Once you dive down about 10m (33 ft) into Cenote Angelita through an initially murky water layer, you find yourself back in clear water and look down upon a mystical layer of hydrogen sulfide at approx. 30m (98 ft), which looks like a giant cloud dotted with tree trunks and branches.

Night Forest

Below the cloud is saltwater. Due to the darkness, you get the impression you are in a night forest.

Depending on air consumption, the ascent will be slow and spiral along the walls.

Experienced Divers

Due to its depth, the cenote, just like Cenote Zapote and 7 Bocas, is only suitable for experienced divers.

Planning Your Trip

Cenote Angelita diving is rated advanced and only suitable for experienced divers. Two dives in Angelita cost 190 €. Combinations with Calavera or Carwash are also 190 €, and a trip with Angelita plus two dives in Dreamsgate costs 230 €. Because Angelita is the farthest cenote from Playa del Carmen, it is the longest drive of all our cenote trips. We dive to a maximum of 30 meters (98 ft), about half the depth of the cenote itself. Rental gear costs 5 € per item or 20 € for a full set.

Cenote Angelita: The Underwater River

Angelita is famous as the “underwater river”: at about 30 m (98 ft), a dense cloud of hydrogen sulfide lies on top of the salt water. Dead trees and branches rise out of it, so it looks like a river flowing through a sunken forest. Above the cloud, the fresh water is crystal clear; inside it, the light almost disappears.

Angelita is an open cenote with no overhead environment, just a deep, round pool in the jungle. Because of the depth, it is only for experienced divers with deep-diving practice. Many guests combine it with Cenote Calavera, Cenote Carwash or two dives in Dreamsgate.
