Dive Site: Cenote El Pit
Level: Advanced
Depth: 30 meters max.
The Cenote El Pit
Cenote El Pit is probably a dive site unlike any other. The stairs down are steep, but there are hoists to lower heavy equipment. Toilets, showers, and comfortable gear tables are available here. Arrival is preferably in the early morning hours, as the sun’s rays extend most beautifully through this deep sinkhole there.
Cenote Walls
The descent is along one of the cenote walls. This way, you always have a visual reference. At 13-15m, a halocline awaits you; this is a layer between fresh and saltwater, which is immiscible due to different temperatures and densities.
Cenote Angelita
At a moderate diving depth of 30m, trees and their branches eerily protrude from the hydrogen sulfide cloud, similar to Cenote Angelita.
This cloud is formed by system-specific bacteria that decompose the organic material down there. Completely harmless to humans, it can be dived through.
Due to its depth, we only recommend this cenote for experienced divers.
