Cenote Dos Ojos
Cenote Dos Ojos is 48 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen and we reach this amazing spot via a 4-kilometer dirt road off the highway. Their facilities include showers, toilets, tables and even small shops to buy souvenirs and t-shirts. In addition, a small restaurant on the site offers snacks and beverages. The cave system of Dos Ojos contains 82 kilometers of tunnels, but, as recreational divers, we always dive within the daylight zone and aren’t farther away than 60 meters from the surface. The name Dos Ojos, or “Two Eyes”, comes from the two openings into the underground rivers that look like two big eyes in the jungle.
Cenote El Pit and Cenote Dos Palmas are part of the Dos Ojos system, too. In Dos Palmas, they found what are probably the oldest female bones in all of Mesoamerica.
Two very different dives start and end in the same cenote – the first eye.
A line called the ‘Barbie Line’ is recommended for our first dive of the day. It’s a very comfortable cavern dive with a maximum depth of 6.5 meters. We stay fairly shallow so we can enjoy the best view of the astonishing decorations.
On the second dive, we dive in an area which is slightly darker than the first dive. Even if there is a feeling of being inside a cave, we will never be farther away than 20 meters from the next open water area. The maximum depth of this dive is about 8.5 meters.
