Cenote Maravilla

Cenote Maravilla is an absolute highlight and a dream for every diver. Even as you descend, you get goosebumps when the first sunbeams fall through the circular opening in the cave, bathing the entire cenote in a magical light.

Cathedral of Light

Especially around noon, when the sun is at its highest, a very special beam of light breaks through the darkness, transforming Maravilla into a veritable cathedral of light and shadow. This is one of the highlights why so many divers and underwater photographers love to visit Maravilla.

Crystal Clear Freshwater

One usually enters the cenote via a ladder and from there directly into the crystal-clear freshwater. Underwater, not only the extraordinary visibility but also the size of the cave is fascinating. Maravilla suddenly opens up into a huge, high, cylindrical chamber that reaches depths of up to 45 meters. For recreational divers, it’s worth diving down to 30 meters here, as then you have the full splendor and magic of the cave before your eyes.

Particularly fascinating here is also the contrast between the stunning nature seen on the surface and the silent, almost surreal underwater world.

Roots extend from above into the cenote and appear to float in the light, and small fish can sometimes be spotted, but the absolute highlight here is definitely the incredible geology on display.

The Sulfur Layers

Another highlight are the sulfur layers, which can be found at greater depths at a so-called halocline.

Here, freshwater separates from saltwater, creating shimmering reflections that appear suddenly, which can immerse you in another world – or rather, make you feel as if you are diving through two worlds simultaneously.
